On June 23, 2025, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Sergeant Shiou Deng of the Los Angeles Police Department was traveling south on the 405 when he witnessed a collision.
After observing the collision, Sergeant Deng activated his emergency lights and pulled over to assist. When exiting his patrol vehicle to assist one of the victims in the crash, Sgt. Deng was struck by another driver. One person died on the scene.
Sergeant Deng was transported to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
Sergeant Shiou Deng was described as more than just a supervisor at the West LA Division. He was the heartbeat of every watch, the one lifting spirits with humor, kindness, and food (especially pizza). Whether he was cracking jokes or offering reassurance during tough moments, he made everyone around him feel seen and supported. Sgt. Deng had joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1998 and had served across multiple divisions with unwavering dedication — including over 16 years in our Mental Evaluation Unit, where he brought compassion and calm to some of the most challenging situations.
Sergeant Shiou Deng had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 26 years. Our prayers and condolences to his family and partners.
